4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
The Copyright Presentation was created for ITEC 7445. The purpose of this artifact was to inform teachers of the copyright and fair use guidelines and provide examples of how teachers can use copyrighted material legally without being liable for violations of this law. My individual contribution was that I made the presentation relevant to specific scenarios that the teachers and students will relate to their own experiences to avoid legal repercussion.
This artifact demonstrate mastery of this standard because it shows how I developed a thorough PowerPoint presentation to model and facilitate the legal use of copyrighted material at my school, providing specific instructions on how to create safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies that fall under the copyright laws. I did this by providing information on Section 110(1) of Title 17 of the United States Code that grants specific exemptions for work displayed by instructors or pupils during the course of instruction. I provided explanation on the definitions of “Fair Use” informing that teachers and students are protected under this concept, however, they are not immune to what constitutes as “punishable by law”. I provided a series of specific examples on how this law can be violated and how it can be used legally.
I learned from completing this artifact that there is a need to clarify this law so that every teacher and student understand what it entails, and how to avoid breaking this law. I also learned that teachers and students always try to develop lessons and complete assignments that are current and relevant to real-life situations, and a better understanding of this law would be very helpful for all involved in the learning process. What I would do differently to improve the quality of the process involved creating this artifact is that I would have included more examples from different disciplines on what constitutes a violation of this law, providing specific examples, and how this law would apply to each subject area.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development, and student learning because now the teachers have a better understanding on how the Copyrighted material law works. The teachers now have a better understanding on the definition of “Fair Use” material and how they can use these technologies to improve their lessons without breaking the law. The impact can be assessed by replaying the presentation’ series of specific copyright questions and measure the data on correct and incorrect answers, this will provide information if there is further need for more training sessions.
