This artifact is the English Language Learner (ELL) lesson and report developed in ITEC 7430. My individual contribution to this artifact was that in this lesson I focused on the use of meaningful technology in the form of a language acquisition app in order to support the diverse learning needs of the student. I used the app’s capabilities to design and implement a specific targeted lesson that would aid the student in the use of school-centered vocabulary focused on Math and Sciences. I focused on the instructional strategies to aid ELL students better achieve their language acquisition goals. In these lessons, I worked with a Spanish-speaking student to find strategies that will be helpful for him learning English.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because I implemented technology that supported the diverse learning needs of the student because the app could be adjusted to the student specific areas for improvement. For example, since the student spoke English at the novice level, the app included a variety of differentiated concepts such as picture vocabulary, videos, and sounds that the student could identify and relate to the task. The app also helped the student to enhance his cultural understanding because the app includes usages of idiomatic phrases that are culturally specific and translated differently. This artifact shows how the app facilitates and models different cultural products, perspectives, and practices of interpersonal communication and pronunciation in the target language culture. The cultural products, practices and perspectives of the target culture included in the app are geared toward increasing global awareness for the cross-cultural experience.
I learned from creating this artifact that it is important to have a variety of technology along with classroom instruction that targets the students own diverse learning style, enhance the cultural understanding, and software that is culturally sensitive to the personal needs of the student. I learned that we need to evaluate each technology that we use in the classroom to fit these needs. What I would do differently is to survey the student on how the device could be improved. Student input on technology use in the classroom is usually overlooked, so asking the student specific topics of interest or how the app could be modified to include a wider variety of cultural topics.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development and student learning, because after working with this student, this app is now part of the curated menu of the technology apps available on our school websites and Clever (the collection of technology instructional materials program), to improve the use of technology in other classrooms as well. This impact will be measure by the data collected by the LMS and Clever, on student usage and teacher usage as well.
