3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. (PSC 3.4/ISTE 3d)
The Assistive Technology Implementation Plan was designed for ITEC 7445. The purpose of this artifact was to assist a student on how to use a language acquisition app so he can practice at home and in school. My contribution was helping the student throughout the development, research, and implementation of the usage of the assistive technology app.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because the artifact shows how I facilitated the use of an adaptive and assistive technology to provide support to the individual student and his learning needs within the language acquisition process. The student was having trouble remembering vocabulary words and grammar concepts, so I suggested that we use an app that integrates both of these concepts in tandem. The app is not only assistive but also adaptive, in the way that it is intuitive and the level between questions and assessments vary depending on the student’s capability. This was particularly beneficial because during this time quarantine was in full effect and the student needed assistance in this subject.
What I learned from completing this artifact is how to use the app in order to communicate it to the parent and student. I learned how to provide measures that can monitor the student’s progress, complete achievements, and provide operational effectiveness. I learned how to articulate and set personal learning goals and develop strategies leveraging the technology. What I would do differently to improve the quality of the artifact and the process of creating the artifact is that I would get the student’s teacher more involved in the process.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted student learning because the student was able to personalize his learning by choosing concepts that were challenging to him and by receiving technology that enhanced his learning. This can be assessed by the data collected by the app.
