5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: Evaluation Instrument
The Evaluation Instrument artifact was created for ITEC 7460. The purpose of this artifact was to conduct a needs assessment to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths, and weaknesses. My individual contribution was the development of a school-wide technology implementation plan where teachers and staff participate in several modes of evaluation in order to better serve the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at my school The technology implementation plan was based on Canvas LMS which we used for the Digital Learning Days (DLD) during our Hybrid schedule.
This artifact demonstrate mastery of this standard because it shows how I conducted a needs assessment to determine how successful the PLCs at my school were in implementing Technology rich lessons, by conducting a series of surveys prior to developing targeted lessons for teachers. I achieved these goals by collaborating with the members of the Technology Committee and, to maximize the success rate of the coaching sessions, we personally observed teachers who decided to implement the technology in their classroom. After the observation, I reflected on the coaching and support provided. Some sample questions of the survey provided to the teachers included questions such as what kind of help they received from the Technology member? If any was provided. What technological resources were provided? If time was provided for the development of the technology lesson and what additional support they required to achieve their goal, and finally, in what kind of technology-based projects they would like to receive information. I, then, used these needs assessment questions to inform the content and delivery of targeted technology-based PLCs. Some of the targeted PLCs included tasks from troubleshooting Canvas to developing and implementing Multi-Media projects online.
I learned from the completion of this artifact that organizational support is important when applying new knowledge in the classroom. Therefore, teachers must receive the support needed in order to be successful and ensure the success for the students as well. What I would have done differently is motivating more teachers to participate in the program, since it was on a volunteer basis, so we could collect more data on the success and weaknesses of the PLCs.
This artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development and student learning because the data collected from the surveys determined how we were going to proceed to increase teacher and student involvement in the implementation of technology in the classroom. The impact can be assessed by examining the data that shows growth in student achievement the areas that were compliant and involved in the process.
