5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. (PSC 5.3/ISTE 4c)
Artifact: Current Reality Report
The Current Reality Report was created for ITEC 7460. The purpose of this artifact to examine the current Professional Leaning (PL) needs in order to determine the effectiveness of the sessions being provided at my school, with a focus on strengthening teacher’s content knowledge, enhancing student learning and engagement through improving teacher’s pedagogical skills and their implementation of instructional strategies related to Instructional Technology.
This artifact demonstrate mastery of this standard because it shows my ability to design and implement a program evaluation that focuses on the PL needs. The artifact shows that during my design of the evaluation tool I found that staff members actively participated in PL sessions which most of it was content related and included multiple designs such as: collaborative lessons, analysis of student work/student learning and pedagogical skills, troubleshooting sessions, and curriculum development and content knowledge. However, the artifact will also demonstrate the areas in need of improvement such as providing teachers with tools on how to incorporate technology to improve the implementation of the literacy focus plan, teachers needed the opportunity to provide feedback and request PL topics and training that best addresses their needs in the classroom when it comes to Instructional Technology.
I learned from this artifact to monitor and evaluate the impact of the PL on staff practices and student learning and how this occurs. Also, how to work with school administrators and teacher leaders to define expectations for the implementation of PL sessions, and how to objectively analyze the PL lessons at my school and how to better serve the teachers by providing surveys on how to better address their needs. I would improve this process by including evaluations on the effectiveness of classroom-centered lessons, and by looking at data more closely on how to improve our pedagogical skills.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement, faculty development, and student learning because now there is a better way for the monitoring and evaluation of the impact of PL sessions on staff practices that is focused on increasing student achievement. Now the evaluation results are used to identify and implement processes to extend student learning. This impact is already being assessed through the learning outcomes measured throughout a variety of software testing programs designed to promote and increase student achievement.
