3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
The Evaluating Emerging Technologies artifact was created for the ITEC 7445. The purpose of this artifact was to evaluate an emerging technology to implement in my school. My individual contribution was that I conducted research on a language lab and provided information on the best ways to use this lab at my school.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because the artifact shows how I collaborated with teachers and how we selected and evaluated the emerging technology, by describing the emerging technology and its general purpose and how well this technology supports the vision for technology use in the school to the administrative team. This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because the artifact explains the criteria for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure by explaining all the limitations of the emerging technology, including any safe, healthy, legal and ethical issues that might arise with its use in a school environment (PSC 4.2). This is assistive technology, Extempore, allows the students to participate in research-based language acquisition.
What I learned from completing this artifact is how to select and evaluate new technology that is aligned with the School Improvement plan. What I would do differently is that I would have solicited a personal visit from a representative from Extempore to school to provide clarifications to questions the staff may have on the logistics of the program.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacts school improvement, faculty development and student learning because now the Administrative Team is considering adding this new technology to next years’ budget. The impact can be assessed when the budget is decided, and teachers and staff are encouraged to provide input on how the school allocates funds for future instructional technology projects that will aid in student achievement. During the School Improvement meeting I will advocate for this program to become part of our curated menu of educational apps.
