2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
The Engaged Learning Project (ELP) was created so the students perform a real-life task within the content and context of expanding their language acquisition skills. The purpose for this artifact was for the students to acquire knowledge of the different cultures we study in the advanced Spanish classes. My contribution was placed in the focus of the meaningful use of technology while modeling and facilitating an authentic learning experience for the students, and therefore, they integrated the use of technology to develop their language acquisition skills.
This artifact demonstrate mastery of this standard because I developed and implemented an Engaged Learning Project that incorporates a high level of technology use, with a specific set of objectives that facilitates the students’ experience in the use of digital tools. This artifact also demonstrate mastery of this standard because I developed and implemented an Engaged Learning Project that is an authentic learning experience by allowing the students to assume the real-life role of an investigative reporter and as an authentic task, they compared their findings with policies in the United States and their own personal culture. This experience is authentic because the students performed research online that was relevant to the task, went on virtual museum visits, visited the country’s government websites, and created a video recording on the style of the news as their final project.
I learned how to evaluate Web 2.0 tools, productivity tools and online projects in order to engage students in real-life tasks. I learned how to create Engaged Learning Projects that are culturally responsive, with high LoTi levels. I designed this Engaged Learning Project lesson containing a variety of Engaged Learning indicators, diverse use of technology that we reviewed during class to obtain a LoTi level that was the highest possible to obtain and included culturally responsive pedagogy. The feedback from my peers and the instructor allowed me to maximize the Engaged Learning Indicators and the LoTi levels of my Engaged Learning Project lesson. What I would have done different to improve the quality of the artifact is the use of expert in the fields, such as musicians and restauranteurs. In the future, it is my goal to bring what I have learned to the classroom to maximize instructional time, critical thinking skills in my students and incorporate technology in an efficient way.
I collaborated with the School Improvement Plan team to model and facilitate the development, delivery and implementation of Professional Learning and Development (PLD) sessions to our faculty that improved their understanding of what it is to utilize technology in the classroom meaningfully. It is my goal to promote the authentic use of technology in the classroom in order to encourage students to become self-directed learners, and collaborative learners through the development of lessons that are both seamless and ongoing. The impact of this artifact will be assessed by developing a series of surveys for the teachers, asking them to provide feedback on how successful their own ELP implementation was and any modifications we should provide for future PLDs.
